A Big Heart

a small community with a big heart

Our Community

Dutton/Dunwich is a small community in Elgin County in southwestern Ontario, on the north shore of Lake Erie, nestled in the heart of the Talbot settlement. The Village of Dutton anchors the community along with the smaller hamlets of Wallacetown, Tyrconnell, Cowal, Largie, Crinan, Iona and Iona Station. Located just ½ hour west of London on the 401 and 2 hours from the US border, our community enjoys the benefits of small town living and yet we can be in a major centre in no time at all.

Blue skies over DuttonDunwichConsider this.... scenic country roads that wander past fields of crops, barns, Carolinian forests and pastures of cattle and horses....people waving as you pass them by....seeing a spectacular view of Lake Erie from 50 foot cliffs with a horizon that goes on forever... hot, sunny days.... small towns with no stop lights....free parking.... people smiling at you on the street....stopping to chat with people you know and the shopkeepers asking about you and your family. This is our community....
Snow lined roadsAs winter settles in, you can enjoy the picturesque snow draped white pines lining peaceful country roads. Get out and spot the wildlife tracks....deer, rabbits, raccoons, foxes and coyotes. Snowmobiling, cross country skiing and the like are great pastimes here.
Downtown DuttonDutton/Dunwich, to this day, retains the charm and character of its Scottish pioneer settlers and a strong attachment to its agricultural heritage. We still have a grainery in town, and many of our farms, buildings and homes have been here since the first immigrants arrived and cleared their land, awarded to them by Colonel Talbot. The Colonel Talbot Estate and the birthplace of John Kenneth Galbraith are just two of our places of interest. Click here for a glimpse back at Dutton.
Eastern BluebirdSpring is the perfect time for leisurely hikes through the woods.  You will also enjoy the beauty of the wide range of wildflowers and wildlife the area has to offer. We are an hour northeast of Point Pelee, the southernmost point in Canada, so birding can be quite exciting in our community.
Tyrconnell BeachOur proximity to Lake Erie allows us to enjoy all the fun summer activities that water brings. Our small, secluded beaches are almost the best kept secret in the area.
Autumn colourAs fall blazes into the area, take a drive on the backroads....check out the brilliant leaves on the trees....watch for deer which are abundant...or enjoy miles of excellent hiking trails including the Trans Canada Trail.
Lake Erie ViewOur moderate climate makes this a perfect place for outdoor recreation. Year round, people can enjoy the natural beauty of the area with its panoramic views of Lake Erie, rolling hills and wide open spaces.

No matter what season....come see us...stop in to eat, shop, fill up with gas or just to grab a coffee along the way....visit our small community with a big heart....you'll be glad you did....and so will we!
